What causes ‘red eye” in flash photographs?

When the camera flash activates the eye is still adjusted to darker conditions. If the flash is enough close to the camera lens, the wide pupil(centre of the iris of the eye) allows the light rays to bounce off the blood vessels located in the retina straight back into the camera and this causes red eye.
